Basketball Zone Defense

The basketball zone is a defensive set up in which all your play actions come around only one corner of the court. Many players make a lot of mistakes in implementing the basketball zone strategy in their offensive strategies. They seem to want to cover every corner of the court and hope that they can get a steal or stop someone from shooting a free throw. This is very dangerous because you never know what kind of defense someone has put up before you!

The majority of great basketball teams have come from using the basketball zone strategy, as they were able to seal players off one side of the court and leave other players open on the other. This leaves a lot of other people confused and wondering what exactly is going on. They may start to double team, and while this tactic does help to prevent a run on the floor, it leaves everyone unguarded against a counter move. A double team is often quite effective at slowing down an offensive movement and making it take place around the perimeter of the court.

One of the biggest problems with the basketball zone is that it does not help the offensive player when it comes to attack the basket. The best defenses in the game of basketball are made up of a handful of incredibly quick, explosive athletes that can both score well and block shots extremely well. However, these players need room to develop their offensive skills, and they also need to be able to drive to the basket. If a defender can force a ball handler to give up the ball, then the other players on the team will be even more open to take away that space. It is imperative that you know how to defend the basketball zone so that your players have a fighting chance at scoring buckets over a zone defense that does not function properly.

The first thing that you want to do is get the most perimeter coverage possible. This means that you should go on the internet and search for videos of successful basketball zone offensive systems. Then study those systems and try to incorporate some of the ideas into your own system. If you do that, then you will have a much better idea of how to actually implement a basketball zone into your own game plan.

You should never completely leave everything in the hands of your defenders, if you want to have any chance at winning. A good basketball zone system will have its defenders rotate as fast as they can to cover as much ground as possible. That will give you time to get to the basket and make plays. It will also give you time to set up the rest of your offense. You may choose to just play a one-on-one game down low, or you may choose to start spreading out and using several different kinds of screens to take advantage of the advantages that your defenders will give you.

It doesn’t matter what kind of basketball zone offense you decide to run, it will be vital that you understand the concept behind it. Once you have a grasp on this concept then you can start putting it to use right away. Don’t think that it won’t take you long to learn and put it to work in games. The more you practice the better you will get at it. There really are no excuses to not start playing a great basketball zone defense system.
