Does this sound like you or anyone that you know?
“Hey, I practice day in and day out, but I still don’t perform well.” “What do I do?”
If so, here are some tips you can use to become a better basketball player.
I’m not going to tell you the same old, “practice, practice, practice”.
Practice is inevitable to become a basketball player, but there are other ways to become a better basketball player, so here they are.
Coach’s Point Of View
Look at things from a coach’s point of view.
Ask yourself the following questions, and answer them as truthfully as possible.
If you were a coach would you want yourself on your team?
Would you be a starter?
Would you be the go-to-guy?
Do you hustle on every play?
Are you aggressive?
Do you play basketball like your life is on the line?
Perfect Practice Makes Perfect
Not only do you need to practice to develop your skills, you need to practice to develop your mindset. In my opinion, basketball is at least 80% mental. Mentality is what sets the great basketball players apart from the good basketball players.
You need to develop killer instinct, and you need to be a beast on the basketball court. Killer instinct is developed by exposing yourself to the game of basketball as frequently as possible. Performing like a beast will require you to be a beast in your daily life.
Be more assertive in basketball and in other aspects of your life. Strive to be the best in everything you do, and don’t let things happen to you, instead, go and make things happen.
Train your body and your mind to be consistent. Consistency is a must if you want to become a better basketball player. Be consistent with your physical and mental practice. Make a conscious effort to be more physically and mentally assertive throughout your daily life. I’m not saying you need to be a bully, instead, you want to be an ethical action-taker.
Don’t be good; be great.
How Do You Spend Your Non-Practice Hours?
Are you reading books about basketball?
Are you watching basketball videos?
Are you studying basketball every day, down to the fine details?
What foods are you eating?
Are you taking advantage of video games?
I used to take the moves from video games and practice them in real life. I literally created my own training workout from an NBA 2k game when I was in High School. When I would play the game, I would write down the moves that worked in the video game and I would practice them when I went to my local basketball court.
Don’t Devalue The Importance Of Mental And Physical Practice
If you want to be a great player, you need to train like the Elites. Going to the basketball court and shooting threes all day is not the way that the Elite basketball players train. You need a specific game plan each and every time you go to your basketball court to practice.
