How To Get To The Basket And Finish With Contact

If you want respect on the basketball court, you need the ability to blow past the defense and finish at the rim with contact.

It’s easier said than done, but it can be done, and I’m going to show you how to do it.

The first thing you need is a go-to-move.

Go-To-Moves

Crossover – dribble the basketball with your right hand and jab step with your right foot and then dribble the basketball across your body into your left hand.(to do a left hand crossover just do the same thing except with your left hand)

Hesitation move – dribble the basketball with your right hand and then take a long dribble and hesitate as if you’re going to pull-up for a shot and then drive to the basket or cross the basketball over to your left hand. (to do a hesitation with your left hand, repeat the same process except switch hands.)

Jab Step – dribble the basketball with your right hand and step forward with your right or left leg to shake up your defender’s defense.

Variations – You can mix and match moves to keep your defender guessing what you will do next.

Next, you need to protect the basketball.

Protect The Ball

Once you get past your defender you need to be able to protect the basketball. You have to keep your head up and be aware of the defense reaching in to poke or steal the basketball. You may have to hold the basketball like a football while you take two steps or take a hop step towards the basket. You also need to learn to shield the basketball with your body.

Anticipate The Contact

– Don’t be afraid of contact. If you’re afraid of contact, you’re not going to be able to score through the contact. You need to get used to taking contact and you need to get comfortable with the idea of taking contact when you drive to the basket.

– If you don’t like contact, master the floater. The floater is a very effective move that you need to have in your arsenal if you want to be unstoppable on the basketball court.

– Practice driving to the basket and finishing with contact. The only way to get better at finishing with contact is to practice over and over.

– Learn to draw the foul. Practice forcing contact in such a way that your defender has no choice but to foul you and send you to the free throw line.

Develop A Pull-up Jumper

When you have a nice pull-up jumper, your defender will have to play you close, which is when you can go to work. This is why you need to have go-to-moves that you can use when your defender is playing you close.

If your defender decides not to play you close you can make it rain. If you want to score more points per game, you need to develop a deadly pull-up jumper.

Having a reliable jump shot will make the game of basketball so much easier.

Mentality

– Develop your self-confidence by proving to yourself that you can score under pressure.

– Watch videos of some of the best basketball players who can score while taking contact.

– Confidence comes from action, so don’t expect to be confident if you’re not putting in the work. You can’t just think you can score and then all of a sudden you will score 30 points per game. You have to work hard and practice daily in order fine tune your skills and abilities.

So, those are some tips you can use to increase your ability to get past the defense and score with contact. Nothing happens over night, but with consistent practice, you will be able to improve your offensive skill set and finish at the rim with the contact.
