Skills Needed In Basketball

Basketball is often perceived as a one dimensional game that revolves around scorers. While that is certainly one aspect of basketball, it’s also true that there are many other aspects that go into a good game. You can’t be an excellent player if you don’t know how to run your team, control the pace of the game and defend properly. Knowing how to integrate these three aspects in every game is the only way to succeed in basketball.

Basketball is not simply a game of points and attacks, but a multi-faceted game of strategy and effort. Players must first have basic basketball skills before any offensive or defensive scheme can even be applied. These skills include setting screens, making plays on the court, posting up shots, rebounding off misses and turnover giveaways and creating effective drives to the basket. There are many more offensive and defensive fundamentals that players must master before being able to contribute to the team.

Proper ball handling is the key to shooting well in basketball. The best shooters in the game have the ability to dribble the basketball and hit at will. It’s also very important for a basketball player to be able to set good screens to prevent other players from stealing the basketball. Just as with ball handling, shooting should also be developed before being in the game.

A common offensive strategy in basketball is a fast break. This offense sets up the defense for a quick jump shot from the corner. One way to stop this is to rotate from the shooting guard position and take advantage of an over-the-top defender who is rotating to the basket. Also, a good offensive system will involve ball movement from both sides of the floor.

One offensive move that is often overlooked in basketball is the turnaround. This is where you take a jab step to the basket, then change into a crossover dribble move to give the ball an easy pass to the shooting guard or wing. Also, many teams try to take advantage of an over-the-ball defender by setting a screen and firing up a three pointer. Shooting over two or three defenders is one of the hardest shots in basketball.

Dribbling is a critical part of every good offensive system. If a player can’t dribble the basketball well, he won’t be able to create plays or score well either. That’s why it’s so important to work on dribbling skills when you’re a kid and continue to improve it as you get older. When you’re younger, there isn’t much of a focus on shooting skills, so most kids tend to develop great offensive moves like shooting off the dribble. Once basketball becomes a better game and offense become more strategic, shooting will become an even bigger part of every team’s overall game plan.
