The Best March Madness Theme Song

basketball jones song

If the NCAA basketball tournament ever adopts a theme song, this 34-year-old hit by comedy duo Cheech and Chong would be a worthy contender. The song is madcap fun, over the top and in your face, just like March Madness itself. But more than anything, it’s a reminder that anyone can achieve their dreams with hard work and dedication.

Cheech and Chong’s 1973 hit climbed to No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and featured an ahead-of-its-time animated promotional video. The song, a parody of the soul classic “Love Jones” by Brighter Side of Darkness, tells the story of Tyrone Shoelaces’ love for basketball. It was the only spoof to reach higher on the charts than the original. “Jones” is a reference to the nickname for the Harlem Globetrotters, who originated in 1926 and have a worldwide reputation for jaw-dropping maneuvers on the court.

A few shots of the real-life Globetrotters are mixed in with the cartoon footage, and the whole thing is sung by a voice actor who sounds suspiciously like the legendary Cheech Marin. The music is a mix of rock and pop, with contributions from a few notable artists. George Harrison played guitar, and Michelle Philips (of the Mamas & Papas) and The Blossoms sang backup.

Another track that deserved to make our list was Kanye West’s “All of the Lights.” Although it’s not about basketball, it’s a great way to get your team psyched for a big game. It’s also a powerful reminder that no matter how many lights are on, you can always be your best self.
