Fouls are a part of every game of basketball and are meant to penalize players who violate the rules of the sport. Contact between opposing players in the sport is inevitable, but significant contact that results in a player being fouled should not be tolerated and is considered a foul. There are different types of fouls in the game, and players can only accumulate a certain number of fouls before being disqualified from the game.
Generally speaking, the more fouls a player receives, the worse off their team will be. The amount of fouls a player receives also depends on the league of play, as each level of basketball has its own set of rules and penalties. In the NBA, for example, a player is allowed six fouls before they are disqualified from the game.
One of the most common types of fouls is a personal foul. This occurs when a player of an opposing team fouls a player on the same team during a possession. A player may only accumulate a certain number of personal fouls before they are disqualified from the remainder of the game.
Another type of foul in basketball is a technical foul, which can be issued for unsportsmanlike conduct. This can include, but is not limited to, cursing at an official or continuous griping during a game. A player who is ejected from the game must leave the playing area immediately and may not return until beckoned by an official.
